The Concept

For a university project, I teamed up with two designers to rethink how we shop, blending VR and AI to create something exciting and futuristic. We started by diving into the shopping habits of university students near campus through face to face interviews, we discovered pain points like struggling to find vegan options (inclusivity), staying on budget, and missing out on deals. That’s where we understand the need and start design part individually.

Research Methodology

The method was qualitative research through observation and interviews in two rounds in two rounds. The first round we interview four students (three international, one local) and one Coles staff member. The Second round with three international students aged 23-27.

Techniques

Empathy maps and user journeys for personas and interviews focused on understanding pain points, preferences, and desires.

Research and Design Objectives

Findings: - 80% struggle with limited finances and actively seek discounts. - Students wish for a streamlined way to discover in-store offers. - Participants rarely check for online deals. - 75% expressed interest in tailored student deals. - Interest in vegan and cruelty-free products, but difficulty finding them. - Many struggled with finding items in-store without clear signage. - Errors and understaffing annoyed users. Design Guidelines: + Improve visibility of discounts tailored for students. + Personalize deals based on budget, preferences, and shopping habits. + Create dedicated sections for vegan, cruelty-free, and environmentally friendly items. Design: The selected idea among different sketches in ideation part of dubble dimond methology, was Coles Vision. Imagine glasses that combine voice commands, gesture recognition, and real-time assistance to make shopping easier and more fun. Need to find a vegan snack or check for sales? Just ask the VR assistant. The sleek, minimal interface, inspired by Coles’ branding, even gives personalized suggestions and product details at a glance.

This project was an incredible learning experience. I honed my research, design, and prototyping skills while creating a video prototype that brought the concept to life. Hearing our professor praise it for its creativity and holistic approach was the icing on the cake!
